We are pleased to introduce HealthWise, a new publication from SusanCatherineKeter.com, designed to guide you on your journey to health and well-being. We chose the name HealthWise because we believe wisdom is essential for achieving good health, especially in a world filled with conflicting advice on health issues.

The Importance of Knowledge for Health

As the Holy Scripture says in Hosea 4:6, \”My people perish for lack of knowledge.\” Often, it’s a lack of understanding about health that prevents us from reaching our full potential in well-being. Before treating any health issue, it is crucial to understand its root cause. If you don’t know the cause, you can’t find the cure. Too often, we rely on the opinions of others about our health without ourselves knowing the true causes and eventual outcomes.

We are frequently treated for conditions like high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar, frequent headaches or gastrointestinal disturbances, without realizing that these are often symptoms of deeper health concerns. Managing symptoms alone rarely leads to true wellness.

The Body’s Signals: What Do They Mean for You?

What does this mean for you? That we often treat symptoms more than the root causes of disease. These symptoms are your body’s way of calling attention to deeper issues that need urgent attention, which can be linked to diet, lifestyle, stress, or environmental factors.

In essence, elevated blood pressure, high blood sugar, aches and pains, are your body’s way of telling you that something in your life needs to change. Maybe you are spending too much time sitting down and not getting enough exercise or you are eating or drinking health-damaging stuff.

Lifestyle and Health: The Bigger Picture

Silencing these signals without addressing their root cause – as happens with the use of some medications – won’t make you healthier. Unfortunately, we often fail to correctly address these signals, relying on treatments that manage symptoms until it’s too late. We sometimes get shocked to realize that our lifestyle conditions have affected vital organs like our kidneys, heart, eyes, brain, or lungs.

Many health conditions, including cancers, are more related to lifestyle choices – diet, physical fitness, and environment – than anything else. The good news is that even after a diagnosis, there’s a lot we can do to become healthier by reversing the factors that brought on these conditions.

Addressing the Root Cause: A Simple Analogy

Imagine if someone stepped on your foot. You would feel the pain, but instead of just taking a painkiller while remaining in the same situation, the real solution would be to ask the person to step off! That’s how we should treat lifestyle diseases: address the root cause.

Yes, you may need temporary relief, but long-term health comes from changing the situations that put you in poor health in the first place. Silencing the pain while doing nothing about the root cause does not lead to good health outcomes in the long run.

A tape measure is a cheap yet vital tool in your health and wellness toolbox. One of the earliest signs of metabolic dysfunction is a growing waistline.

If your waist circumference exceeds 35 inches for women or 40 inches for men, it’s time for a health check. You may be at risk of metabolism conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancers such as breast cancer and other lifestyle conditions.

If your waistline is suspect, examine your diet and lifestyle. You can easily get rid of that belly fat, faster than you got it. Change before it is too late! Do not wait to get diagnosed with a lifestyle condition before you take action. .

Weight management doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s achievable with consistency and focus. With the right diet, exercise, and regular fasting for as little as 12 hours at a time, significant progress is possible.

Last year, I weighed 87 kgs, and today, I’m at 63 kgs – a weight I’ve maintained for over four months since I attained it! My waist circumference has also remained below the 35-inch mark.
